Callas takes SUNY Cobleskill
on international mission...

This past fall I was approached by a former High school teacher about applying for a vocational exchange through Rotary International called Group Study Exchange (GSE). As a SUNY Cobleskill Senior Admissions Counselor I will be taking a trip of a lifetime with Rotary International's GSE program when it heads to Greece for six weeks.

I am one of five people chosen to represent the 7190 Rotary Region; I was nominated by two of my former teachers from Elmira Free Academy, Dean and Mary Ellen Morgan. Though I am not a Rotarian, I was still able to apply and interview to go on the trip as long as I was sponsored by a local Rotary. The Penn Yann Dundee Rotary on Keuka Lake sponsored me and helped to get my application through at the eleventh hour. more...

The hidden benefits of SUNYCAP...

As the year continues and we approach another SUNYCAP conference, I'm reminded of the many faces of colleagues I'll be able to see after another year of recruiting. The conference is truly the only opportunity throughout the year that many of us have to see colleagues that aren't a part of our territory or located in our region.

As a member of the SUNYCAP Board and Conference Committee, we get to work behind the scenes in a variety of ways during the months leading up to our conference with colleagues from different campuses. When I began serving on the SUNYCAP Board in 2005, I knew SUNYCAP provided opportunities for professional growth and development but I had no idea that I would be able to help out in so many different ways. As a counselor at a community college, my recruitment territory is exclusive to the surrounding counties. As such... more...

How do you treat your visitors...?

Admissions Counselor

Ever wondered how other campuses run their open houses, interviews or daily visits? How do they do it and what kind of money do they have to work with? How do we, as individual campuses, deal with 'hosptiality' when it comes to our visitors? Do we feed them? Meet with them one-on-one? Give them pens or pencils...bumper stickers or window clings? Do we spend thousands of dollars on visitors...or not a dime?

Well, I know what we do here at Fredonia, and you know what you do on your campus...but if you take the survey and share with us what how your campus deals with visitors, we'll compiled the results and share with everyone in the next edition. Who knows...it might even help make your job easier.

Of course, we will need more than three of you out there to actually complete the survey...I say this only HALF sarcastically...as there were only four people to complete the last Endeavors "recycling" survey.

Take the survey today and start sharing.

Conference registration open...

Now's the time to register for the 2008 SUNYCAP conference...set for June 11-13th at the Hyatt Regency in Rochester, NY. Click the form (right) to download your conference registration form today, or click here to see a tentative schedule of events.

Results of 'annoying' listserve question ;^)

Just in case anyone was curious...the answer to the question, "just who uses the title 'admissions counselor' (and what are the alternative titles being used...)" -- is...

About 42-percent of our SUNY campuses replied...and it turns out nearly 60-percent of respondents indicated their campus uses the "Admissions Counselor" title. "Admissions Assistant" is the next most frequently used title, at nearly 30-percent. Other titles used include "Admissions Representative" (2-percent), and Recruitment Specialist (1-percent).

The 'Power of 64'...

SUNYCAP President

As I enter the homestretch on my second term as President of SUNYCAP it occurs to me that The State University of New York is a very different system than the one I began working for in 1994. In those 14 years our membership is responsible for handling the day to day responsibilities that have led to unparalleled growth, impressive increases in quality and repositioning SUNY as a first choice among traditional students.

The "Power of 64" has never been more evident, more recognized, more revered. A simple trip to a college fair is all that one needs to see that the strength in numbers philosophy of the quotation above is alive and well as we, admissions professionals, work together to bestow the virtues of our own offerings while also letting families know of other SUNY schools who may be able to assist. more...

SUNYCAP is happy to announce that the 2007-2008 membership directory is available online.

Voting this year will also take place online, a first for SUNYCAP. Nominations and Elections Committee members Pat Mente and Josh Gregory have been putting the finishing touches on the electronic ballots. Six positions are up for grabs, so keep an eye on your inboxes. Voting begins later this month.

Also of note, in just under two weeks time, the Awards Committee will select recipients to be recognized at the conference in June. If you know someone who is deserving of recognition for a job well done, who has gone above and beyond, or who took a project on that made life in the office easier...nominate them for an award by completing the nomination form . The deadline is May 27th, so make sure you act now. If you have questions about the process, drop me a line.
