SUNYCAP Endeavors

Conference less than one week away ...

Sandra, we're now less than one week away from the SUNYCAP Conference, set to begin next Wednesday, June 11, 2008.

For 37 years, our members have gathered after graduation to recap the year that was, reward those who made a significant mark on our organization and re-energize for a new recruitment cycle. I am excited to continue the tradition for the 38th year.

The links below are to a schedule of events for each of the days of the conference. Take a few minutes to check them out, we have plenty of great activities planned.

Wednesday, June 11 (Day 1)

Thursday, June 12 (Day 2)

Friday, June 13 (Day 3)

Make sure you enjoy the program that Jeff Gates and the other members of the conference committee have put together for you. I'm sure we'll have a memorable time.

If it's not fun, I'm not doing it...

Tracy Knofla

Keynote Speaker

Inspiration and humor all wrapped up in one?!? Who could ask for more?

This year's conference keynote speaker, Tracy Knofla, is one of those rare individuals who has a unique ability to appeal to young and old alike by bringing laughter and learning together. She lives by the motto, "If it's not fun, I'm not doing it!"

She's adamant that training is serious business that does not have to be serious. With more than 20 years of experience, Tracy has conducted hundreds of presentations for thousands of people across the country.

Tracy holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in recreation and leisure studies from Southern Connecticut State University. She spent 11 years working at Indiana University Southeast as a college administrator. Tracy also served as director of therapeutic recreation at several long-term care facilities in Connecticut. She also is a co-owner and a featured presenter for High Impact Training, a nationally recognized training and development company. A sought-after presenter, Tracy travels an average of 200 days per year speaking to college, corporate and nonprofit audiences on such topics as chaos, customer service, organizational effectiveness and teambuilding.

Thirty eight years...that's a lot of tradition and history.

But 38 years is even more impressive when you consider the service SUNYCAP has provided. The organization provides us with the opportunity to learn new tools and techniques... things to better help the students we work with on a daily basis.

As admissions professionals - this conference has incredible potential to benefit you - with opportunities to focus on topics ranging from building alumni relationships to dealing with the legalities of student immigration and even territory management. Make sure you take advantage of the wide variety of workshops available. Participate. Ask questions. Get involved. Who know's what's around the bend for us as admissions professionals...? Maybe one of the workshops will have some answers?

DJ Kenny here! More lights, more sound and more fun! That's what I'm bringing to this year's Wednesday night DJ Dance party at the Hyatt Grand Ballroom (aka Club SUNYCAP).

People I've talked to the past few months on the road have been asking if I'll be back playing the party tunes again this year and I appreciate the conference committee putting trust in me to entertain yet again.

With such a wide range of musical tastes the biggest challenge in trying to keep everyone happy. So, if you haven't done so already, make your online song requests. Enter the username "sunycap" (no password needed) and you can pick away! I'll do my best to get your song on.

PS: Word just in... we'll be playing the charity dinner on Wednesday too! See you soon.

Findings from our last survey ...

I am happy to report that we had five times the response for the Visitation Survey over the Recycling Survey featured in a prior edition of Endeavors with every sector represented!

According to Noel-Levitz (2007) 73.5% of students reported that the Campus Visit was very important before selecting a college or university to attend. Looking at our own research with admitted students, nearly 92% have visited the school they plan on attending. Both of these reinforce the importance we place on getting our prospective students to campus.

Some highlights from the schools that responded include:
• 100% hold weekday visits of some kind
• 90% hold personal interviews
• 80% hold visits on weekends
• 90% hold fall open houses (60% have multiple)
• 90% hold spring open houses (40% have multiple)
• 20% hold a summer open house
• 50% hold an accepted student open house
• 50% do specific programs for high school juniors
• 40% reported spending $9,000 or more on open houses
• 40% spend less than $250 per year on daily visits
• 40% spend less than $250 per year on weekend visits
• 30% give away tee-shirts at accepted student programs
• 0% give away pennants (guess they're not a cool anymore)
• 20% give presents to alumni at various programs
• Other giveaways: lanyards, USB drives, Frisbees, yo-yo's, and shoulder bags.

Now you know...and knowing is half the battle.
